NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The ninth school record of the season for Bentley University senior Stephanie Mattson (Smithfield, R.I./Smithfield HS) came Sunday with a second-place finish in the triple jump during the Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at Smith College.
Mattson, who had finished in the long jump on Saturday, cleared 38 feet, 5.5 inches to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division II championships and break the school record she set earlier in the month (37'5.75") by nearly a full foot.
Earlier in the day, Mattson ran the 400 meters in 59.16 seconds, good for another fifth-place finish. She wrapped up the meet by helping the Falcons finish eighth in the 4x400 relay in 4:12.93. That quartet also included freshman Kaitlyn Helfer (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy HS), junior Chantel Lewis (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Sciences and Math) and senior Abby Forman (Altamont, N.Y./Guilderland HS).
On the men's side, Bentley was fifth in the 4x400 with juniors Josh Gettings (Lowell/Lowell HS) and Robert Moritz (Singapore) combining with senior Ryan Kenney (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush Henrietta Sperry HS) and freshman Jesse Blow (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker HS) to finish in 3:26.43.
Sophomore Antonio Catino (North Reading/North Reading HS) was the number seven finisher in the 60 hurdles with a clocking of 8.74 seconds.
Cannata was also part of the Falcons' 4x800 relay team that was seventh in 8:25.29. That quartet also included junior Shawn Andrade (Suffield, Conn./Suffield HS) and freshmen Christian Lestik (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown HS) and Derek Pittorino (Westborough/Westborough HS).
Senior Dan Hergott (Wallingford, Conn./Xavier HS) just missed out on the top eight with a ninth-place finish in the 3,000 (9:06.61).
In the team standings, the Falcon men were tenth of 11 with 11 points and the women's team totaled 17 points for 12th place.
Next Sunday, select members of the team will compete in a Last Chance Meet at Boston University.
