SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Bentley University junior Stephanie Mattson (Smithfield, R.I./ Smithfield HS) was a double-winner Saturday while competing for the Falcon women's outdoor track and field team during the eighth annual Yellow Jacket Spring Invitational at American International College.
Mattson captured the 400 meters in 57.79 seconds, breaking the tape more than three seconds ahead of runner-up Wahjerjay Blango of AIC. Sophomore Chantel Lewis (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science and Math) also impressed in the 400, placing fourth of 16 with her 1:01.49 a PR by 2.16 seconds.
Mattson was also first of 12 in the triple jump, clearing 36'11.75". That was seven-and-a-half inches better than Merrimack's Lauren MacGregor, who finished second.
Mattson also helped Bentley to second in the 4x400 relay, combining with junior Abby Forman (Altamont, N.Y./Guilderland HS), sophomore Kirsten Lebreux (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford HS) and senior Monica Levy (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun HS) for a time of 4:11.81.
Mattson's times in the 400 and triple jump put her at number two on the Northeast-10 Conference performance list, and the Falcon relay time was also second best in the conference thus far this season.
Sophomore Paige Fehskens (Wareham/Wareham HS) placed second of 14 in the 5,000, turning in a 19:16.80.
Junior Tina Touri (Watertown/Watertown HS) improved on her previous career best in the 1500 by more than 14 seconds with her 5:13.45 good for 11th among 47 competitors.
In the 100 hurdles, freshman Hayley Licata (Andover/Central Catholic HS) was fourth and Levy placed ninth. Licata finished in 17.55 seconds and Levy turned in a 17.92.
Next Saturday's schedule has the Falcons competing in both the UC San Diego Triton Invitational and the Silfen Invitational at Connecticut College.
