NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Nadine Edwards (Danbury, Conn./Danbury HS) and senior Jessica Hodsdon (Brewer, Maine/Brewer HS) led the way as the Bentley University women's swimming and diving team competed in day two of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships at Southern Connecticut State's Hutchison Natatorium Friday night.
Bentley will enter Saturday's final day of competition second among eight teams. The Falcons, who have 11 medals thus far (two goals, six silver and three bronze) have a total of 502 points, 119 fewer than first-place Southern by 119 and 85 more than third place Assumption.
Edwards captured gold in the 200 yard freestyle, with her time of 1:55.38 an NCAA "B" cut. She edged Meghan Fay of the host institution by 0.18 seconds, with her fast opening 50 (27.05) giving her a lead that she never relinquished.
Edwards also earned silver in both relays that were contested Friday as she helped Bentley to times of 1:48.49 in the 200 medley and 7:56.98 in the 800 free. The former also included Hodsdon and seniors Taryn Dooley (Feeding Hills/Agawam HS) and Monika Drogosz (Unionville, Conn./Farmington HS). In the 800 free, Edwards followed sophomores Danielle Hellstern (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) and Kaitlyn Simoneau (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South HS) and freshman Kelly Culkin (Avon, Conn./Avon HS) into the pool.
Hodsdon also claimed silver in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, posting B cut times in both. She swam the fly in 57.40 seconds and turned in a 1:04.21 in the breaststroke. Bentley earned 45 points in the latter with junior Amanda Le (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford HS) fourth (1:06.26) and junior Heather Exley (Oceanside, Calif./Vista HS) sixth (1:08.71).
Hellstern finished fourth in the 200 free, reaching the wall in 1:58.12, and Dooley and Drogosz were sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 100 backstroke. Dooley finished in 1:00.09 and Drogosz trailed her by about half-a-second.
