Waltham, Mass. – Assumption survived two final shot attempts by Bentley that would have tied the game in the final seconds to come away with a 10-9 win over the Falcons in the NE10 quarterfinals on Wednesday night.

Trailing 10-9, Bentley forced an Assumption turnover with 1:36 left to get the ball back. They called timeout and executed a successful clear to get the ball into the offensive side of the field. With 12 seconds left senior MaryKate Staines (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) fired a shot on goal that went just wide and out of bounds.

Sandrine Heller (Weggis, Switzerland) then brought the ball out behind the net after the restart and found freshman Caroline Boudreau (Foxborough, Mass./Foxborough) in front, but Boudreau's shot was denied by Assumption goalie Allie Collins with four seconds left. Neither team was able to secure possession as the final seconds ticked away, as the Greyhounds secured the win.

Bentley trailed throughout the first half, and was down 7-4 early in the 2nd half. But a 3-0 run that took less than two minutes erased the deficit. Goals by sophomores Julia Glavin (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich), Cara McCarthy (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) and Heller with a man-up goal tied the game 7-7 at the 22:06 mark.

Assumption went back in front briefly with a goal by Helen Tautkus on a free-position at 20:32. But McCarthy responded less than a minute later to tie the game 8-8.

Almost seven minutes elapsed before another goal, but McCarthy scored it for Bentley on a free-position to give them their first lead of the night at 9-8 with 12:53 remaining. The lead didn't last long however as Assumption tied it on a goal by Sarah Reilly at 10:18, then went ahead 10-9 on a goal by Emily Spath just 28 seconds later.

In the first half, Bentley received goals from Heller, Boudreau, Staines and Glavin.

Falcons goalie Eliza Bresler (Newton, Mass./Newton North) made 10 saves and had two caused turnovers. Collins made 16 saves.
