WALTHAM, Mass. – Matt Brooks (Brunswick, Maine/Phillips Exeter) and Kris Campbell (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) scored the tying and go-ahead goals late in the 4th quarter, and goalie Michael Haggan (Braintree, Mass./BC High) came up with several big saves down the stretch to give the Bentley men's lacrosse team a 10-9 victory over No. 17 ranked Pace on Senior Day.
Brooks' goal at the 1:44 mark of the 4th quarter tied the score 9-9. Nick Irby (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) followed with a face-off win and Brooks secured the ground ball. Brooks then set up Campbell for a shot from the right side that beat the Pace goalie to put Bentley in front 10-9 with 1:27 remaining.
Pace won the ensuing face-off, but Haggan saved a shot by Peter Bashar, one of his nine in the 4th quarter. Bentley got the ball back and executed a successful clear, but a turnover gave the Setters the ball back. Haggan came up with yet another save, this time denying Vincent Vasheo, before an off sides penalty on Bentley gave Pace one more possession with 13 seconds left.
The Setters though turned the ball over and Brooks scooped up the ground ball to secure the win for Bentley.
Haggan was on the top of his game all afternoon, especially in the 4th quarter. With Bentley trailing 9-8 with under four minutes to go, he save three shots in a span of just 20 seconds to keep his team in it. He finished the day with 19 saves overall.
The late game heroics were first made possible by a 4-0 Bentley run from the 3rd quarter into the 4th quarter. A 4-0 run by the Setters of their own over the first eight-plus minutes of the 3rd quarter turned a 4-4 game at halftime into an 8-4 lead for Pace after a goal by Daniel Keenan at the 5:22 mark.
Falcons goals by Matt Sanford (Stratham, N.H./Bow) and Campbell at the 5:14 and 4:14 marks of the 3rd quarter cut the deficit to 8-6.
Bentley continued the run in the 4th quarter. Senior Joe DiRaimo (Huntington, N.Y./John Glenn) scored at the 13:22 mark, then junior Scott Carvalho (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) found the back of the net off a pass from senior Ryan Donovan (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) to knot the game 8-8 with 9:50 to play.
A goal by Pace's Ryan O'Hagan at 8:50 put them in front 9-8, but Haggan's efforts in the cage for Bentley the rest of the way closed the door on the Pace offense and allowed the late game comeback.
The win improved Bentley's records to 4-8 overall and 3-7 Northeast-10, with its final game of the regular season coming next Saturday at AIC.
