WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior attack Brendan Grant (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) scored four goals and had six ground balls and senior goalie Mike O'Neil (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) made 15 saves as Bentley University earned its first win of the year, 8-4 over Assumption Wednesday night in Northeast-10 men's lacrosse play.
The Falcons led 2-1 after a low scoring first half, but both offenses came to life in the third quarter. The Falcons outscored the hosts 4-2 in the quarter. Senior Zach Paz (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) opened the quarter's scoring at the 10:27 mark, and Grant scored the first of his two during the quarter two-and-a-half minutes later.
Junior midfielder Alejandro Ruiz got one back for the Greyhounds at the 5:48 mark, but Bentley scored two more in a row in a span of 1:14 with the goals coming from senior Jared Kinch (Cohasset, Mass./Boston College High) and Grant to make the score 6-2.
Assumption got back in the game by scoring the next two goals. Senior John Murphy scored with 1:12 left in the third quarter and senior Will Langevin found the back of the net just over two minutes into the fourth quarter.
Bentley finished strong though. Senior Dante Mancini (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) scored with 3:26 left to make it 7-4 and Grant netted his fourth of the game with 1:05 to go to provide the final margin.
The Falcons are now 1-3 on the season and 1-1 in the NE-10, while Assumption drops its third game in a row and goes to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the NE-10.
Bentley is back in action on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Pierce.
