ERIE, Pa. – Freshman Kyle Schmidt (Menomonee Falls, Wisc./Sioux City) scored with just 16 seconds left in the third period to break a 3-3 tie, and cap a Bentley rally from 3-0 down to give the Falcons a 4-3 win and series sweep of Mercyhurst Saturday night in Atlantic Hockey action.
After racing down the right wing, Schmidt took an initial shot on net that was saved by Mercyhurst goalie Jimmy Sarjeant. But Schmidt crashed the net, followed his own rebound and beat Sarjeant for the winning goal with just 16 ticks left on the clock.
The Falcons improve to 11-7-3 in Atlantic Hockey play with the victory. Junior goalie Gabe Antoni (Lansdale, Pa./Springfield) came on in relief with 11-plus minutes gone in the first period, played the final 48 and shut Mercyhurst out the rest of the night with 27 saves.
The Lakers led 1-0 just 1:41 into the contest on the first of two straight goals by senior Chris Bodo, who scored again at 8:48. A shorthanded goal by Mercyhurst captain Matthew Zay made it 3-0 at 11:22.
But a goal by junior Andrew Gladiuk (White Rock, B.C./Nanaimo) with just six seconds left in the period gave Bentley some life, and got the Falcons to within 3-1 at the first intermission.
Bentley carried that momentum into the second period as Gladiuk scored again just 1:25 in as the Falcons took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play. He crashed the net for the rebound after a shot by Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta/Westside) was saved by Sarjeant. That was Gladiuk's 100th career point and his 17th goal of the season.
A little over three minutes later, junior Derek Bacon (Calgary, Alberta/Okotoks) tied it after he fought through a scrum in front of the net and jammed in a loose puck. That gave the Falcons three unanswered goals in less than five minutes of game time to tie the score.
That was the last goal until Schmidt's winner with just 16 seconds left, giving Bentley its first win after trailing by three goals since the 2010-11 season.
Next up for Bentley is a home-and-home series with Holy Cross, beginning Friday night at Ryan Arena in Watertown.
