WATERTOWN, Mass. – Bentley University won its third straight contest Saturday night, topping Canisius 3-2 in the first game of a weekend Atlantic Hockey series at Ryan Skating Arena.
The Falcons got goals from sophomores Joe Campanelli (Pierrefonds, Quebec/Westminster Prep) and Dan Koudys (Grimsby, Ontario/Burlington Cougars) in the first period, and a power play goal from senior Dustin Cloutier (Berkley, Mich./Mahoning Valley Phantoms) in the second period which proved to be the decisive goal. Senior goalie Joe Calvi (New Lenox, Ill./New England Jr. Huskies) made 26 saves to win his fourth game of the season.
Campanelli got the Falcons off to a good start, scoring just 1:40 into the game. He took a pass in the slot from Koudys behind the net and buried his shot past Canisius goalie Dan Morrison.
At 8:21 Koudys made it 2-0 for Bentley after taking a shot from distance that hit Morrison's glove and trickled over the goal line.
The Griffs got back in the game in the second period on a nice individual effort by senior Vincent Scarsella, who broke through the Bentley defense and beat Calvi with a deke to the right. That goal made it 2-1 just past the 14 minute mark of the period.
Towards the end of the period, Cloutier put Bentley up 3-1 with a power play goal after he snapped a wrist shot from the right face-off circle past Morrison.
Canisius made it a one-goal game again early in the third period with a short-handed goal by Taylor Law. Law took a pass from Scott Moser in the neutral zone, which sprung him on a breakaway and he was able to beat Calvi.
Bentley's penalty kill was the unsung hero of the night, shutting out the Griffs on their eight power play chances, including two in the final eight-plus minutes of the third period. They also killed off a 54 second two-man advantage for Canisius in the second period.
The Falcons get to .500 for the first time this season with the win, improving to 5-5-1 overall and 4-2 in Atlantic Hockey. Canisius falls to 5-6-4 and 4-5-4.
