Hodsdon, Edwards Turn in Winning Efforts as Bentley Claims NEISDA Lead after Day 2
WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior All-America Jessica Hodsdon (Brewer, Maine/Brewer HS) and freshman Nadine Edwards (Danbury, Conn./Danbury HS) each made two trips to the top of the medal platform Saturday night, helping the Bentley University women extend their lead over Keene State to 80 points after the second day of the competition at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Championships to 80 points.
In the three-day, 23-team meet being held at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center, the defending champion Falcons will take 1054 points into Sunday's final day of action, with Keene State second with 974 and Assumption College a distant third (797).
Edwards picked up her fourth and fifth gold medals of the meet as she captured the 1000 yard freestyle in meet record time and was part of the Falcons' winning 800 free relay team. Her time of 10:36.67 not only was a meet record, but an NCAA "B" cut and a school record, breaking the mark Arden Brust had owned since 2008 by 9.90 seconds.
In the relay, Edwards partnered with freshman Danielle Hellstern (Southbury, Conn./ Pomperaug HS) and sophomores Heather Exley (Oceanside, Calif./Vista HS) and Kellen Power (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian HS) for a winning time of 7:47.22. That was a B cut and a school record by more than eight seconds.
Hodsdon captured the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.50, matching the school record she set at last year's NCAA Division II Championships and setting a new meet record. Exley was third in the same event, finishing in 1:06.57.
Earlier, Hodsdon combined with Power and juniors Taryn Dooley (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam HS) and Monika Drogosz (Unionville, Conn./Farmington HS) to earn gold in the 200 medley relay. Their time was a B cut, as was Hodsdon's in the 100 breast, and a school record by more than a full second.
Power twice broke her own school record en route to silver in the 200 freestyle. Her prelim time of 1:55.45 was two-tenths of a second better than the mark she set at the same meet a year ago, and she posted a winning effort of 1:54.71.
Third-place finishes were also recorded by sophomore Amanda Le (Chelmsford/Chelmsford HS) in the 400 individual medley (4:43.84) and Dooley in the 100 back (1:00.69). Senior Susie Boretti (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) was fourth to the wall in the 1000 free, with a time of 10:57.07.
Sunday's action begins at 10 am, and the finals are slated for 5:30 pm.
