Johnson, Sideris & Switzer Senior Award Recipients
Three-year starting quarterback Bryant Johnson (Hopedale/Milford HS) and field hockey All-America Stephanie Sideris (Watertown/Watertown HS) have been named the Outstanding Senior Athletes at Bentley University, and hockey standout Mike Switzer (Calgary, Alberta/ Olds Grizzlys) was selected as the 2011-12 recipient of the Edward J. Powers Award as Bentley’s premier senior student-athlete.

The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston announced on Thursday that Bentley University sophomore forward Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) has been named the 60th recipient of the Walter Brown Award, which is given annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England.

Big Night for Bentley at Atlantic Hockey Awards Banquet
It was a big night for Bentley at the Atlantic Hockey awards banquet on Thursday as the Falcons took home two major awards and had five players earn All-Conference honors. Head coach Ryan Soderquist was named Coach of the Year and Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta/Westside Warriors) was selected as the Rookie of the Year. Sophomore Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) was named first team All-Atlantic Hockey.

In venues from the Dana Center to Rochester, N.Y. to Mankato, Minn., Bentley University teams and athletes will be in action Saturday, competing in NCAA Championships and the Atlantic Hockey Playoffs. WALTHAM, Mass. - Bentley (4-8-3, 4-3-2 AHA) plays the final game before its semester break Friday night at UConn (5-8-2, 4-5-1 AHA) at Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs, Conn. The Falcons are tied for fifth with three other teams in the tightly bunched Atlantic Hockey standings with 10 points, and the Huskies are right behind those teams in ninth with nine points. Hockey Team Faces UMass Friday Night in Amherst
Bentley returns to the state of Massachusetts to take on UMass at the Mullins Center Friday night at 7:00 p.m. The Falcons are coming off of a strong showing against Michigan, now ranked fourth in the country, last weekend in Ann Arbor. The Minutemen opened their season last Friday with a conference game at Northeastern and settled for a 3-3 tie. This will be Bentley’s only meeting of the season with a Hockey East school.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Freshman Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta/Westside Warriors) gave Bentley University an early 1-0 lead, but sixth-ranked Michigan pulled away late to take a 5-1 win over the Falcons in front of 5,090 at Yost Arena.

Falcons Set to Open Season Friday at No. 6 Michigan
The Matchup: Bentley opens its 2011-12 season this Friday and Saturday against No. 6 Michigan at Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich. Both games begin at 7:35 p.m. Unlike a lot of teams around the country, Bentley did not play an exhibition game prior to the season starting. After playing exhibition games against Ontario IT and the USA Under-18 team on Monday, the Wolverines opened their season with a 5-0 win over Niagara on Tuesday behind a hat trick from junior Lindsay Sparks.

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Atlantic Hockey Association recently announced its 2010-11 All-Academic team, and Bentley University is well-represented again with 15 student-athletes named to the team. Ten of the players earned at least their second selection overall and nine are repeat honorees from a year ago.
